Me thinks thou protest too much.. :D

Ollie

But Toad's comments remain.

They wouldn't be in a Vic that low.

Not a good idea at all.

Not a good idea.

Really bad idea.

Baddy bad.

Bad.

Just Bad.

Just plain bad.

Just so plain bad.

Just so plain bad my friend.

Just poor strategists those Luftwaffe guys.  No wonder they lost the war!

WeeJimmy

Ollie,

just to be clear

would a vic formation be a bad idea?   B)

Mairfrog

The Luftwaffe wouldn't go faffing about with an outdated formation like the vic. It was only the RAF who were that daft! Even we learned that the finger four 'rotte' formation was far superior.

Mind you, bombers are a different can of fish, as it were. The USAAF flew in huge box formations, whilst RAF bombers flew in loose streams, to avoid collisions in the dark. Obviously no fighter escort could acciompany those bombers across the atlantic, so speed and altitude would be the tactics of choice.

However, that would make for a pretty crappy photograph. The 'New York' skyline with a few specks at 35000 feet hasn't the visual impact of Wooksta's pic. It must be a triumphant fly past over a conquered America!

Ollie

Well, it's still crap.

Want to fly low?

Get a B-24 and fly lower than power lines.  The Yanks did it.  But your German pilots seem to be to girlie to attempt such a feat.

:D  :D  :D  :P  :P  :P  :P

Ollie

One more thing.  How are those things supposed to fly very far at such a low altitude?

It's a know thing that every engine consumes more fuel down low than up in the air.  And it's very very very true with a turbine, either a jet or a turboprop.

:o

Ollie, put DOWN the wooden spoon, mmm'kay?

Yep, it's behind allright !

When you said you recalled putting the buildings overtop of the a/c photo, I figured it must've been just a part of the burnt out building looking like the wingtip. It actually looks a bit darker than the a/c in the first photo.

And one of these days I'm gonna try and do a photo like that ! I've got to wait until all my Propwash '52 stuff is done first.

Cheers !

Well, the last thing you want to do is go on autopilot at low altitudes.  Don't do that if you don't have a terrain-following radar.

Down low you have downdrafts and updrafts, thermals, birds, etc...  Keep your hands on the stick and look outside.
