QuoteICBM sites may have been on the list. But not all Soviet nuclear weapons were in ICBM sites. Some were on submarines.
Good point, did we know where most of their submarines were in the 60's?

Doubtful.

Some of their missiles were also designed to be carried on rail cars, and therefore would have some limited mobility. Though that may have been later.

Much later.  The RT-23 Molodets ICBM was only operational on railway based launchers in 1987.  As the fUSSR broke up in 1991, it's rather outside the picture.  The USAF proposed rail based Minuteman IIIs and later MX or Midgetman missiles, none of which even reached the testing stages, let alone operational deployment.  The fUSSR fielded 97 RT-23s - 36 based in stationary silos and 56 rail-based, all deactivated after 1991 (in Ukraine where the majority of the silo based missiles were) and about 2000 (for the remaining 10 silo systems and all the rail based ones).

I never saw "On The Beach"

Read the book, its far better and well worth it, if you want to taste how people in the late 1950s feared the world would end from a nuclear apocalypse - not with a bang but a whimper...

Thanks Rick.

I wasn't sure when they were.

Yes, the book is excellent. Although the film does feature a very sultry looking Ava Gardner.

And Fred Astaire!

Well, the bit of the world where you are anyway. The rest of us had 'gone with a bang' already according to Mr. Shute.

Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Well, my defence is that I was referring to the whole world, not just the other half...

If you read the book, we face it basically with typical Australian abandon, mixed with stoicism and a fair touch of annoyance at the irresponsibility of those who have proclaimed themselves our betters throughout history...

Not seen it or read it but the father of a friend of mine was an RN submariner (he is 6'7" so that branch of the service was a foregone conclusion from the moment he signed up) and claims the back of his head can be seen in the movie.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

I read the book over forty years ago, so yes I know how it goes.
