OK, you want longer wings? (RW build warning!)

Warning! RW Build, no Whiffness detected!

With my predilction for longer wings I suppose this was a natural. I've had it in build for a few years now but lost the landing gear until about a month ago, so now it's done and dusted.

Obviously an A Model Voyager but given a big work-over to reproduce its configuration just before take-off on its round the world record flight on Dec. 14th 1986. This needed big changes to the engine cowlings, wings warped downwards, booms modified, a trim tab added to the port canard and props heavily modfied. The aircraft never made any of its flights in the same condition as any of the others, a very intense development programme meant it was modified on a flight by flight basis, so the A Model kit only represents the Voyager in its initial build state.

Very nice! I wonder how those wings would look on a DHC Dash 8?  ;D

I'm tempted to get one of these to turn into a UAV.

I remember seeing this take off (on TV); the amount of wobble in the airframe was quite impressive.

It took 14000 ft of Edwards AFB's runway to take-off, a long long way, and en route the wing tips scraped on the ground so much it wore right through the fibreglass and both winglets fell off! That didn't seem to worry them too much, they cared more that the outboard fuel tanks might have got some leaks but apparently they were OK.

I have the book that was written about the whole project and there's mind boggling things mentioned on every page.

Why only one trim tab?   Its a pretty strange looking aircraft!

Good question, but as it was designed by Bert Rutan and flown by his brother it probably answers itself.  ;D

Tophe will love it, it's not only twin boomed (maybe even THREE...) but it's assymetric as well!

Kit et al:

I would like to build a big wing P-51 but keep the existing wing by adding extensions. Say no more 20-30mm per wing and I want to keep the chord proportional as it tapes outs to the tip.

Any suggestions on candidates? I was thinking of using horizontal stabs? Wings from smaller aircraft?

Thanks

How about the outer wings from a Spitfire 22/24?  You get a nice taper & retain the straight wing tips.

I've done that on my F-6H and I made its 15 mm extensions from laminated styrene. The third piccie down on this thread

shows what I did. It's not that difficult and you have no limits on shape etc.

How do you "militarize" it??

Really, I remember the flight and how excited I was. It harkened back to the "golden age" of aviation. That is, most of the distance, altitude, etc. records for propeller planes were established in the 1930's and some post-war enhancements. But for the most part new "records" were unattainable. A round-the-world flight nonstop was one of the few left undone.

Knowing my penchant for unusual aircraft, I would like one of these in my collection, but it would take up so much shelf space!!
My mind is like a compost heap: both "fertile" and "rotten"!

Cool. I'll give that a try. It will be a fighter and not a Recce bird, BTW I have Shih-poo (Shih-Tzu poodle) and not a cat. Is that okay for pictures?

Hehe, I guess, so long as it doesn't sit on the extended wings and crush them.  ;D
