At a guess the failure was due to the wing being over stressed from the sudden landing. If in the last "landing" the downwards firing rockets had been used the landing could well have been a success.

Too many of the stopping rockets were fired when in the air, causing the aircraft to slow too much.  Flight engineer was blinded by the top rockets and thought they were on the ground, so he fired off the remaining braking rockets.
