RAF Museum Reserve Collection

The Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton and the London Transport Museum both have Reserve Collections. So does the RAF Museum at MoD Stafford, not far from Cosford.

Wouldn't mind a quick visit there one afternoon. Has to be pre-arranged though and probably for a group. Maybe before the next SMW.

The Science Museum also has a reserve collection, the 'large object storage' at Wroughton. Not open at the moment, but ordinarily at least parts of this can be visited.

In the Netherlands, there's an annual 'museum day' where many museums have special events. The RNLAF museum opens its storage hangars on these days. I've been there once, it was fun to wander around the old stuff, but not much that wasn't already on display (e.g. half a squadron's worth of Starfighters).

In theory.........  

The last two annual 'Open Days' at Wroughton have been cancelled, and at pretty short notice too, with very little being given to explain why. Meanwhile the airfield itself continues to run other events like large scale flying model shows and classic car meets.

Perhaps someone lost the hangar keys....
