Ironically, the one I'd ordered in from Asia before this thread ever started showed up on Ye Olde Verydamp Doorstep today.
This just might have to be built in Dakar guise!

You could do the 2CV Sahara; this had a second engine in the back driving the rear wheels.

And someone actually used a 2CV in the 2007 rally: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wH-hbY1VCI

In the early days (1980-ish), the event had a much lower profile so most of the entrants were amateurs. One of the first races was won by two Frenchmen in a Renault 20, modified with a turbocharged engine and 4WD.

Not exactly an all-terrain vehicle.

And this isn't the only unusual vehicle that's been entered. There have been Citroën CX, Renault 4, a Rolls-Royce, a 1927 Renault KZ, Porsche 924...

Surely an Austin K2 ambulance sponsored by Carlsberg rip out the stretchers and put a big engine in the back.

"Probably the best Dakar entrant in the world"
