Could Gripen spawn USAF trainer?

Just stumbled across this blog post, and it would make a nice whif: the Gripen as a potential replacement for the T-38 in USAF service:

Too much aircraft, IMO. No need for a supersonic, highly agile fighter design as a trainer. I think a Hawk T2-derived design (or similar - I think there's an Italian MB-something-or-other advanced jet trainer around?) is much mroe likely, and would be much more appealing.

I do really like the Gripen, but as a trainer I don't think it has much of a chance. Now as an Aggressor, that's another matter entirely.... ;D

Grippen would be cool, but the Hawk just makes sense. And the commonality with the USN birds certainly would be an aside
