Not sure yet Kit, not even sure what to build it as yet so any ideas?

With a rocket engine it's going to be a) Quick and b) VERY short legged so the more fuel you can carry the better I should imagine. So an  F6 or an F2A with the big belly tank would be the way to go I reckon. Forget the overwing tanks as they'll just get blown off at M 3.0  ;D

AFAIK the F3 was actually the fastest Lightning variant, I'm not sure why but maybe an F3 wing might give you an edge.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Wasn't it because the F3 still had the small belly tank, while the F6 had a much bigger belly?

Could be, yes, but the fairing of the F6 tank was a lot smoother than the rather 'scabbed' on look of thje F1-F3 tank. I wouldn't have thought the relative drag factors would have been much different.

It might be that -Drag factors were apparently very tight on the Lightning.  I've heard that they had to do loads of redesigning when the Red Top was introduced, because it was a little bit bigger than Firestreak.  Also why Lightnings never had wingtip missile rails, AFAIK...
