That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.

In reply to the original questions here, the answers are that the spec. called for 4 hrs loiter time at 150 nms from the carrier. And it managed that with six Pheonix missiles aboard, and could land back aboard the carrier in that state as well.

But apparently it was a real bitch to land, and the USN concluded that there was no way pilots other than experts would be able to do it, especially at night.

This info gleaned from the 'Navy Fighters' book on the F-111B that I got at the MK show.

We're talking about the F-111B here?

Well yes, as that's what the book is all about............

Assuming it's not classified: After loitering for 4hrs at 150 nm from the carrier, how much distance was it expected to zip out to in order to intercept enemy aircraft?

The book's silent on that, but I'd assume that after hanging around out there for 4 hrs it'd be an bingo fuel and headed for home.

Usually the carrier's Air Boss would arrange a take-over so the next aircraft on station would arrive some some 10 mins or so before the first one was bingo. That's what the FAA did with the SHARs during the Falklands argument anyway.
