Those lucky enough to pick up the Mushroom Models book on the RAAF Mirage IIIO will be aware of some of the test & trial schemes worn by the later Mirage IIIO as they developed new camo schemes in the 80's. One of the air defence schemes tested was a lighter grey camo pattern for Air Defence with UK style toned down pale blue & pink roundels rather than the Dark roundel Blue & Post office box red.

So What-if the RAAF went with the UK style markings rather than the US style on its combat aircraft ?. Instead of monotone Black or Grey markings Air Defence units went with low profiles pale blue & pink whilst strike retained the dark blue & red but in smaller roundels and retained full colour but smaller profile squadon markings.

Onto Squadron markings we are familiar with the Chess Knight logo or the alternative checked tails of the RAN 805 sqdn Skyhawks, but waht about the other front line RAN unit 808 sqaudron, both have been used as late for RAN helicopter units but What-If the RAN had continued to operate fixed wing Carrier aircraft and made use of both squadrons, what sort of tail markings would 808 carry in counter-point to the 805 Chess knight ?

Just some ideas to get the inspiration flowing, maybe somebody can look at creating their own decals to offer a different option for the model builders then the run of the mill markings on offer ?.

808 Sqn RAN used a lightning stripe on the tip tanks of their loaned Sea Venoms.  Different colours seem to have appeared at different times, so a low-viz simple black lightning strike might work & fairly easy to cut from a block of black decal.  Alternatively, they use a trident in their squadron badge, so you could take a trident marking from 801 NAS & trim off the wings?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

you may as well all give up -- the truth is much stranger than fiction.

I'm not sick ... just a little unwell.

Or a similar one with the omission of the white?

Thorvic

Well the Mirage retained the white, but quite plausible to go with the two colour version especially if used on tactical aircraft in full colour as the RNZAF used at one stage..
