Probably...in this case, the space of the landing gear contain a fuel tank in front of the pilot over the espace of the wheels, and increase his range.

for the cockpit/nose, depending on your spares box. how about a Hunter.  IIRC, the Matchbox kit included both single seat and trainer versions, so it wouldn't be a waste.

Brewster's Proposal 33 for a pusher carrier fighter popped up on Secret Projects. Looks 'model-able'. The booms are basically stick shaped. The wings and vertical tail are obviously from the Buffalo prototype. Cowling and prop spinner from P-40B/C. Horizontal tails from P-51 perhaps?

But what about the cockpit and nose? Anyone got any suggestions?

J 21, or perhaps a Ki 46-II.

You need either a longer tail or your wings moved forward a bit, say right up behind the new cowling, & the undercarriage with them.

I fiddled with "improvements" to the basic Buffalo a loooooong time ago, but merely put a bigger, longer nose/engine on it. Then, a year or so ago I wanted to re-vamp this unsatisfactory whif, so added wingtips, moved the cockpit forward slightly, and lashed up a P-47 tail. Not content with a mere construction whif, I experimented with a "bubblebath" camo, too!! Anyway, here is my Balinese Bison:
