I'm trying to find space in the WW2 era USAAF F for recce designations. I've done some looking and can't find a F-1 or F-2 designations (i can only see from F-3 onwards). Any know?
Whatever.

From one of my books I've got this

27 P-39Fs were converted into P-39F-2 variants for the ground-attack and reconnaissance role. They were used for training, never engaged in combat. Now that's slightly confusing because it's not clear if the F is the Recce designation or simply the fact it was based on a P-39F ????

Can't find any reference to an F-1

Hail Wikipedia!

Recce A/C

The F-1 was the Fairchild 71, redesignated C-8; the F-2 was the Beech Model 18/C-45 Expeditor.
The F-106- 26 December 1956 to 8 August 1988

I've found a book at home that confirms this. I'd been looking at something else in Wikipedia that missed these two. Thanks for your research.

I'm trying to find a spot for a WW2 recce, US-built Spitfire in the designation system.

With no missing numbers in the F series and this being a late war development (it's a Spitfire PR.XIX kit) I'm thinking of F-16  as an option.
Whatever.

Oddly, while the USAAC gave its PR Mosquitos an F-8 designation, it never did that for the much more numerous Spitfire PRXIs.

I do like the F-16 designation for the PRXIX though, go for it.  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Somehow Kaiser Fleetwing Spitfire sounds appropriate  ;D
