What if Fokker D.XXI was equipped with RR Merlin and retractable uc?

The big engine needs to be balanced, somehow.

Very plausible, go for it!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

A Finnish version of the Fokker D.21 *DID* have retractable landing gear!!

Lookin' Good! Looking almost Italian!
My mind is like a compost heap: both "fertile" and "rotten"!

Yup and interestingly the speed advantage was so slight that they converted it back to the fixed variety
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

The Wooksta!

The Dutch were looking at licence building Spitfires so likely Merlins too.  And replacing the Mercury with something a bit pokier wouldn't be a bad idea.  All the fighters with Mercuries were pretty poor as it had sluggish acceleration - it was fine for transports or biplanes but not modern (ie WWII era) fighters.

It was pretty much the last gasp in development of a WWI engine and Bristol struggled to get extra horsepower out of it for the Blenheim V.

Dutch even considered Daimler Benz (before German invasion, I asume) engine

The Wooksta!

The Yugoslavs tried the Hurricane with a DB601 so it's plausible.  A Bf 110C/D/E cowling is your best bet.

Well,  i'm fan!!
it's much more that plausible and possible:
here's a scan just for discussion of  "le fokker D21" from Peter de jong (translate in french, french editor Lela press:

It has been a fokker's project, merlin and/or DB 601...

The Wooksta!

The latter looks like a Lancaster power egg whereas the DB601 version just doesn't look right at all - the top should curve down (it does on all the single engined fighters to adopt the engine and the twin engined ones too), that's just almost flat.

Again, I'd recommend using a Bf 110 engine cowl.  It may disagree with the drawings but looks intuitively 'right'
