Would it really matter as long as the correct light lit when you flipped the appropriate switch?

Not at all, but the wiring system for every aircraft would have been different.

The wiring would not need to be different from aircraft to aircraft. Sufficient length of wire at the light end of the loom would allow for the different positioning of the various lights.

One thing to keep in mind, restored museum relics don't have to work so as long as it has lights are showing they don't necessarily have to be in the right location.  I have noticed on numerous occasions that a restore aircraft has been painted wrong or has some equipment added that weren't on the original or has some equipment missing. 

If you're going to model a 'restored' aircraft at a museum then it's fine to do what the museum has it as.
