IIRC the first pilot to EVER do a vertical take-off with the X-35 was a Brit too, simply because he'd got a lot of time on the Harrier T2 that had developed the flight rules software at Boscombe Down. For full details, and I DO mean full, there's a couple of chapters about the development in John Farley's amazing book 'A View from the Hover'.

When they put out the vid of that first take-off MTS had its own version where a stream of MTS logos were pouring out of the fan duct and bouncing off the ground.  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

But I STILL can't get my hands on a production 1/72 F-35B model for love or money.  :banghead:

I hear your pain as I would like one as well
