The shape of the Volcanic's receiver looks to be related to the Winchester rifle (which was based on a Volcanic design). Maybe you could start with a toy Winchester and work from there?

Wasn't there a gun in Firefly that was essentially a cut-down Winchester?

An old Western RPG favourite of mine, particularly when fitted with the optional 12 gauge barrel under the standard barrel.  A single-shot shotgun for close-range room clearing and a pistol for following up.  The original over-and-under.
