This is the third of my recent builds of the Airfix 1/72 Hurricane IIc *

I found a profile of a USAAF P-40 based in the Ellice Islands which had a (to my eyes) lovely sand pink/sky blue colour scheme and I decided to put this on a RNZAF time served Hurricane IIC seeing out it's last days on "sentry duty" in the Elice Isles.

The paints used for the scheme are Xtracrylic's RAF Desert Pink Gulf and a Valejo light blue for the undersides. Markings are taken from a Ventura RNZAF P-40 sheet and are very, very thin so beware if using them.

I enjoyed these 3 Hurricanes and the Airfix kit has no vices at all.

Well that is different - wasn't expecting pink!  Earth Brown and Foliage Green would have been my bet before opening the thread.

Yup  ;D As I say I found the profile in the SAM P-40 book and thought it looked gorgeous. My rationale is that although the aircraft were originally in the scheme you mention once they reached the sandy/dusty Elice Isles they were repainted. Why repaint time served aircraft at the end of their service life you ask ? Especially when in an out of the way area like the Elice's which only occasionally see the odd Japanese long range flying boat on a recce.

Well the NCO's thought the groundcrew had far to much time on their hands  ;D

Hi, Chris!

I know this is nit-picky but it's Ellice Islands (not Elice). Formerly part of the British Protectorate of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands (1892-1916), then the British Colony of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands (1916-1976). They are now separate nations (Kiribati (pronounced Kiribus) & Tuvalu).

From 1916 to WW2 the colonial capital was on Ocean Island (now reverted to Banaba) where I lived for a while as a child (I was 11/12) & visited from boarding school for a further 4 years. I have the base half of a British naval gun shell (formerly of Singapore, as were the guns) stamped in both British & Japanese identifiers. Ocean Island was also the site of a relatively unknown (minor?) Japanese atrocity; the execution of about 150/160 islanders after the Japanese surrender, on 20 Aug 1945 (1 day before Australian forces landed to reclaim the island).

Hope you'll excuse this diversion from your great Kiwi Hurricane but I guess I feel a little protective of my former residence.

Seriously: love the build & the paint job (pity about that decal on the port side fuselage, though).

Very fine idea. There have also been some P-39 in this livery - AFAIK some sources also suggest that the pinkish "sand cammo" color could also have been a very light grey, much like FS36440. Nice build

No problem Guy.Thanks for pointing it out. I've corrected it

I love that part of the world. Been to a few places out there, but not Kiribati and Tuvalu ---yet !

Thank you sir. The reference I used mentioned the possibilty of the light grey colour - I prefered the pink  ;D
