I visited the Anson Engine Museum in Poynton today. Fascinating place for anyone with the slightest interest in "infernal combustion", with many working exhibits and a staff of genuine enthusiasts who really know what they're talking about. Well worth a visit if you're in the area (East Cheshire):

As well as the engines, they also have an amazing huge model of the Poynton area as it appeared in 1900. This was built by volunteers over a five year period, working from original maps that were blown up and laid on modelling tables for reference. The horizontal scale is 75" to the mile, which works out at 1/800-odd. However to give it more relief, the vertical (landscape) scale is half that, and n-gauge (1/148th) figures and animals have been added for colour. It really is something.

Pics can be found here (and maybe elsewhere on the site too): http://www.enginemuseum.org/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=28&page=1
