I have been working on my fictional African wargame setting (Morvalonga) and found 2 Matchbox Dornier Do-28s in my stash.  They look rugged and most suitable for Africa.  So I decided to use one as a paratroop transport - that one was easy and just needed the doors missed out and bench seats installed.

However, I felt the paratroopers would need some dedicated air support.  I've always had a soft spot for the American gunships.  This was reinforced when I was on Operations and an AC-130 sorted out the opposition who were spoiling my whole day.

So the other Do-28 has been converted to a gunship. It has four 7.62mm machine guns under the nose, two hardpoints for rocket pods or light bombs, 2 chutes in the cabin for dropping flares or anti-personnel bomblets and in the door a turret mounting a 20mm cannon and co-axial .50" HMG.

The nose MGs are just drilled out slots, nothing special.  The hardpoints are plastic card with a pair of rocket pods from (I think) a Matchbox Hawk.

I put some work into the cabin, fitting two chutes from sprue and scrap bits, bomblet and flare racks.  I was pleased.  BUT I cannot see them through the windows!  Ah well, I know that they are there!

The gun mounting is a button and the ammo and spent case chutes are carved and filed from sprue.  The cannon came from the bits box - originally from a WW2 Flakvierling, the 50 cal was left over from a half track kit and the gunner (invisible in the photo) is a demoted pilot figure.

Next?  I could use another Do-28 as a second transport and one or two Westland Scout Helicopters for the rapid reaction force.  So I'm off to search e-bay!

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
