Something different...  ;D

This has to be explained a bit: This kit in 1:32 (Moebius kit, re-boxed/sold by RoG) is a contribution to a themed group build at www.phoxim.de, a German SF modelers forum.

Topic is simple, so that it attracts lots of participants: build a Mk. II or Mk. VII Viper, but make it a custom paintjob. Mods like light effects are not necessary, but allowed, OOB build is the norm - nothing flashy. I was the 18th partcipant in the GB, and each Viper is to carry its "starting number" - hence the final code "18 Yellow" for my contribution.

"18 Yellow" has no paradigm, it is rather an interpretation of a paint job I did years ago on a Macross Valkyrie - and it suits the retro lines of a Mk. II Viper ("Small man's X-Wing Fighter") well?

The kit was more or less built OOB, just some added details around the hull and in the cockpit, as well as missile ordnance under the wings - the latter are probably authenic (even though the Hellfire AGMs themselves not...), there is one episode where Vipers carry such weapons, and there are design sketches which suggest that there actually are wing hardpoints. But, anyway, it makes the Viper look a bit more beefy - it has seen some serious battle, I think. ;)

Cool!

Those fluffy dice are a bit big, though, aren't they? I'm sure the CO will have something to say.

Yes, a bit... but the dice were to be seen in order to attract the beholder into the cockpit, and after several attempts this were the smallest specimen I could cut from balsa wood.  ;)

It looks used

I like A Viper in a solid color that isn't  white...

There's one thing I was wondering about: Is there a particular reason why the missiles are white? I was thinking that a darker color might be even better.

Dizzyfugu

They are pale grey, white would have looked much too harsh... No deeper meaning - I wanted them to stand out from the all-red Viper. Black or dark grey would have looked too comic-like. Olive drab would have been another option, but finally I settled for the simple grey. Just personal taste :)

As a side note: this kit (together with the wonderful works from the Group Build at http://www.phoxim.de/forum/index.php?board=111.0) might end up in the British "Science Fiction & Fantasy Modeler" magazine, early next year.

The GB is still running and open (currently 21 entries in progress and partly finished), so if someone wants to join the creative mayhem...
