Meanwhile... finishing the basic touches to the body, with a coat/hush of RAL 2003 applied "from above":

And that's what the figure looks like after de-masking. Bright!

Then, here's an interim status, after the white primer surfaces have been painted with a light grey tone (RAL 7035, Humbrol 196), and already some details in black (the embossed "stripes" on the left upper leg, armpits, valves under the breast) and brown (soles)  have been done. Still rough basics, but the progress is discernable.

Next episode (I guess): some shading and corrections, deliberate use of decals for cheating and contrast lines applied with a fineliner pen.

Stay tuned...!

More mayhem!

In order to emphasize edges and engravings, I apply a thin wash with black ink. Some pigments will also cling to the rest of the surface, adding more shades to the sprayed basic tones.

Still many flaws, but now it's time for the plugsuits' characteristic "stripes" on the upper legs.
Most interesting, the early Asuka design features risen 3D shapes, and only on the left hip!

I decided to create a symmetric look, that comes closer to the final TV series designs, while incorporating the 3D parts.
That said, these elements are - compared with later plugsuits - a bit too short, so they have to be lengthened, at least visually.

In order to save time and trouble I went for simple water sliding decals as solution, with some painted cosmetics.
The original leg elements were apinmted first, with simple flat black. Tnen I cut from a black decal sheet wide arcs of appropriate width and with rounded end, and added them to the 3D elements on the left leg. The connection was then added with paint.

Having this benchmark for length, width and position I cut out two longer, mirrored arcs from the decal sheet and transferred them to the right leg. Decal softener helped to get them into shape, and due to the curvy bum the arc shape is a must!

Measures were taken only roughly, but effectively this method worked very well - much easier and cleaner than trying to paint all this!

Still a lot of fine tuning to be done, e. g. "panel lines" made with a 0.5mm Fineliner ink pen, corrections and extra shading by brush almost everywhere, but things come together. Slowly, but steadily!

Dizzyfugu

Things are coming together, step by step. More and more details are added, and corrections made...

And one evening later...

Almost there! At this semi-final stage some more decals are applied, e. g. the 4s on front, back and shoulder guards.
Some more small details, like the white rings on the valves on the belly (they come from an Airfix Hs 129) or the yellow markings on the upper arms (anti collosion lights from a F-15) are added, too.

Just for trials and right before applying a coat of matt varnish overall, I placed the head/face onto the body for the first time - it's always exciting to see how the overall expression of such a figure is. And I am pleased how well this turns out!

Finishing touches - progress is not easy to tell anymore - it's mostly panel line corrections and minor touches.

Ladies and gentlemen: here we are! Figure has just been finished, and here are the final scenic pics:

Thanks a lot. I am happy how the figure turned out - has the right look and feel for the NGE universe, and the facial expression is also fine.
Was a nice distrcation!

I don't really understand the genre, but I can appreciate good workmanship
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Dizzyfugu

Well, it takes some insanity and open-mindedness to get into anime - but once you accept it, there's really cool stuff out there!

Thank you very much for the feedback!

The twin ear studs are the icing on the cake.

Super job there Thomas, even if I, like Chris, don't understand the genre one bit.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Angsty, neurotic teenagers pilot giant robots against alien invaders. That about sums it up!

So, Dizzy - are you going to build Unit 04 for her to pilot? ;D

Pyro, the grin on that sent me to Wiki,  it says approx 80M tall,  so what 13 M tall out here...
Gonna need a lot of paint for that Dizzy, a lot of paint

Thank you all for the positive feedback. If you can, I'd highly recommend the Neon Genesis Evangelion video series. It is actually a landmark of the genre - if you watch it, you'll find it disturbing, I guess, but it has many aspects and the characters are all great - anctually, it is rather a freak show of broken and neurotic people, but you also have big mecha battles. :)

As a side note, the ear studs... everything has a meaning, esp. in anime!

Clothing details or the color of the hair can tell you a lot about the person you see - timid characters tend to have blue or green hair, while blonde or pink hair hints at a complicated and capricious person.

Pierced ears can mean two things, as such kind of body decoration is "against" the buddhist ideal of an unscathed body: the person is rather self-conscious and 'rebellious' (read: opposed to traditional society, which is still strong in Japan), or "westernized/foreign/alien(!)". It's part of universal anime codex - esoteric to outsiders, but common sense.

I thought that this would add some profile to the figure, esp. when I gave her rather normal hair.  ;D

Another side note about it: I did that on the 1:8 figure, too, so I had to be consistent here. The "beads" I used are actually a free give-away I received with a figure kit order - these are 1mm metal balls (I assume they belong into ball bearings!), and now I eventually found a proper use!

Suits her well, I think?  ;D
