QuoteJust a thought, Davey, why not sweep the vertical tail forward and mount it there along the lines of what was done on the AN-71 Madcap?  You might have to go with a constant chord forward swept tail, but it'd definitely look different.
that's what I've done with my RAF TriStar AEW, just sliced off the fin, mounted it facing the wrong way & clad it with some plasticard, haven't finished the rest of it yet but the tail looks good...

BTW, my back story goes that we bought the Sentry radar & equipment & fitted it into ex-Pan Am TriStars instead of buying the American system off the shelf  ;)

Or you could move the tailplanes to the place where the engines are now, and hang the engines from pylons on the tailplanes.  :dum:

*SHUDDER*  I rather suspect that'd be exceedingly difficult from a structural point of view.

QuoteWell there was apparently a very workable Nimrod AEW.3 concept put forward -- it involved a lisence-built E-2C radar fitted to a standard MR.1. Canned in favour of two Ferranti pulse-Dopplers
ah yes the Hawkrod project. I remember seeing  a drawing of it in an old Air International mag from the early 80's.  If i remember correctly it retained the aft farranti dish. Bit of a mix and match. It was looked at as a posible replacement for the AEW 3 when the idea of going cap in hand to Boeing was not the favoured option with the RAF.
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

does anyone out there have any drawings or infoermation on the 'rotodome Nimrod' aka. 'Hawkrod'??? the only drawing i can find on file is the one oin Roy Boot's 'Spitfire to Eurofighter' which seems to show a truncated (Comet like?) tail?

any further details would be of great use as iv an underway model of this project almost at filling and priming stages!

happy modelling, cheers, joe

Maybe not. You can put the tailplanes where the engines used to go, so they're attached to a structure that's strong enough. You'd probably have to redesign the tailplanes for sufficient strength, but that's no rocket science either.

Hey, this is what-if!  :D

The tail won't do anything to affect performance. Maybe...

Bodged up this Hawkrod last night:

QuoteI'm not sure exactly how this would look/work, but if you did away with the T-tail and swapped in a wide tail with the fins mounted outboard, a la the A-10, it would cancel out the intereference from the dish.
Yeah, but difficult to do with aft-mounted engines.  That's why I made my suggestion. ;)
Ok, this may be totally out of the question, but could a V tail work in place of the T tail??
