German R4M Rocket

Wasserfall was essentially an A5 rocket - with radio control.  It was visually aimed and controlled until it reached the correct height in the bomber formation when it was exploded, again by radio control.  The A5 was the development model for the A4 - the V2.  It was smaller about a quarter the size but had basically similar aerodynamics, liquid fuelled rocket motor and guidance system.   In most histories of the development of the V2 you'll pictures of A5s slung under aircraft, being launched from Peenamunde, etc.  In theory, it would have been possible to utilise a similar system for the A4, linking a radio control system to the guidance system.

The obvious problem in the use of Wasserfall was the control system.  Counter-measures would have rendered it useless, once it's frequencies were discovered.   What stopped it being used was that they never quite perfected the guidance system.

QuoteThe R4M was also shorter ranged and less accurate than the HVAR.
While I can't speak for range, but I remember seeing the R4M's and they seemed to fly reasonably well.  The 2.75" FFAR on the other hand seemed to fishtail all over the place

QuoteNIH syndrome.
That I can understand... makes sense.

QuoteSomething the US military has particularly suffered from
Why was the US more succeptable to it?

Quotewe all know that Goering was a horrible piece of work and would have fully deserved the fate that Nuremburg decided for him
Of course

Quotebut there is one incident during the war that gained my sympathy and that is the matter of the threat from the Mosquito wooden plane...
I don't feel any sympathy... admittedly I think he was right, I'm glad he never got what he wanted.

QuoteGoering begged the German aircraft manufactureres to just copy the Mossie and they just couldn't grasp what he was demanding as they kept repeating that it would take time to develop a plane like the Mossie..."just copy it!", he kept bellowing, to absolutely no avail....
Why did they not grasp what he demanded?  The instructions seemed quite simple: Reverse engineer the plane.  Frankly I'm surprised he didn't just throw a few people who refused to do it in one of the concentration camps... that would have forced the rest into line (Hey, I'm not saying this is right, but he was considered to be largely either narcissistic/psychopathic)

Gondor

QuoteMaking a direct copy is a bad idea during war time because there would be recognition problems with aircraft and tanks etc, missiles, bombs and other ordinance could also cause a problem as your opponents could produce new versions which were different to what your side were used to and thus cause problems in handling if you got your hands on them in the field.
I thought the FFAR was a post-war development?

Mr. Creak

QuoteBecause "just copying" can, in many circumstances, end up costing far more than coming up with a new but similar design.
Why not just make it similar?  The stability issues with the 2.75" FFAR
That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.

No idea but history is replete with examples of pork-barrelling so it might not necessarily have always been the fault of the military but rather the politicians who benefited from it...

1/ How did the R4M compare in terms of accuracy with a 20mm cannon?
2. How did the hitting power of the R4M compare with the 30mm, and 37mm cannon?

Yes, I have smarty-pants, and I found nothing, so I came here.

But you didn't say that, now did you, Kendra/Robyn?

How much are you willing to bet that I can't find the information you want, online?  A bottle of decent red wine, perhaps?

  • I don't always sponge: I do sometimes look for information.
  • I know the diameter of the weapon and the weight
  • What I do not know is the accuracy of the weapon -- it looked accurate in footage
  • I'm not sure if it was as good as a gun
  • And no bets
