The truth this time ;D

Using mainly A-7 low viz schemes I tried to imagine how the concept of Low Viz markings could have been adopted earlier ( around late Korean War period)

With overall GSB the light gray becomes almost white and removing the red bar from the national insignia only makes it more stark.

Using  a light gray Star and bar and replacing the red bar with dark grey toned it down some what ( rather pleasing on the eye to my mind) but wasnt really very toned down against the GSB. The AC and plane number in the darker gray seemed to work well and the more modern and accepted star and bar ,I thought worked really well.

Im thinking another corsair in overall GSB with the darker gray markings would look the part. Although I would imagine aircraft in that scheme on a mainly propeller flight deck at night in Northern latitudes would be a very dangerous world for the deck crew.

I think the nightfighter red on blue was only used shore side .  Others may know better.

It sparked a few conversations at Bolton so all in all not a bad project.

Just my own personal preference I like the stars and bars on the right side of the fuselage. Different enough to make people do a double take.

AFAIK there have been F4U's in the Korean war (night fighters, IIRC) that were all dark blue, but the normally white insignia had been painted light blue. Looks REALLY odd - there's an Italeri 1:72 kit that offers this as a decal option.

Microscale did a sheet for it. At the time there was quite a bit of discussion about the "blue".

One school of thought was that it was taken from a Squadron  book painting trying to show the markings as seen in moonlight and others that it was a one off. Both schools of thought got a lot of mileage out of their respective opinions, even unto the point of perpetuating the supposed myth in other publications. To be honest I cant remember the outcome, perhaps like the blue "Mustangs "and purple "Rufes" its still being debated even against real evidence.

Being on the lunatic fringe of modelling Im just doing my own thing. :drink:

Captain Canada

I like the way the white one looks. Looks like it was painted on in the war zone.

I agree about a dangerous deck situation as well !
