Interesting concept, makes my Frightening V/STOL version seem plausible.

EE Lightning with 4 engines?

Now that WOULD be a goer!  ;D

2 x 2 in a box, or two fuselage's worth on each wing?

Goodness knows where you'd put the fuel needed, otherwise it'd run dry before it crossed the airfield boundary!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Regards
Kit

That would look like your triple Mustang layout.

I was thinking 2x2 ... or you could have all 4 on top of each other like in the "Anglo-Atomic Thunderbolt X1966":

I wonder if there was a four engine Wellington,

There was in WHiffWorld............  ;D

I've a vague memory of a tri-motor Wellington whiff, somewhere, somewhen........

Yes, in USN colors. Was posted here. There's also been a (nice!) trimotor Bf 110 (in Italian markings IIRC) last year or so.

Concerning a 2x2 box engine layout, I have seen a sketch of a flying wing Yalovlew bomber design with such an arrangement. Looked awe-inspriring!

For a Lightning... how about wing tip nacelles (added, of course), mated with a longer fuelage and bigger wing span? Add a tandem cockpit, and it could have been sold to Canada after the demise of the CF-105...

Or solid nose, rear exhaust pipes deleted and rear reshaped. Bigger wing and four poded jet engines.

I've got a vision of a couple of bowsers following down the runway/taxiway  ;D
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
