Some of the books from those heady days were very badly written and had even worse research. I've just Googled a title and then phoned a mate and there was definitely a section that stated the Mig-15s had to come in on B-29s like flying bricks at altitude where the bomber's gunners had an easier time of it.

With the XF-85 I was probably just memory-mixing up the Goblin and later designs. Ask me about ancient crocodilians and I'm your human!
