I remember reading somewhere that Japan used to consider an attack helicopter derivative of the OH-6 equipped with a turreted 20mm cannon and cockpit moving map display...... the memory was more than one and a half decade old though.

In any case, below are pictures of RC models, but how would a Defender with contra-rotating rotor have looked in real life?

Nope.  OH-1 was mentioned seperately, IIRC (as OH-X since the magazine article I read it from was around one and a half decades old and probably more).

I'm glad this thread was opened, as there seems to be a lot of information out there on the OH-6 and family, though I have yet to run down anything regarding this turreted JGSDF version.  I did run across all sorts of interesting stuff, such as "The Quiet One", an OH-6 with a modified engine flown by the CIA in Vietnam.  Much more recent is the Boeing AH-6S attack version, developed in response to the collapse of the ARH program.  Interesting combat load on that last machine: seven-shot rocket pod, twin Miniguns, a four-pack of those new laser-guided FFAR and a Hellfire(?).

Isn't it rather range limited by the electric cord on the ground beside it? ;)

While likely to be an unrelated development, this IMHO comes pretty close to what the proposed OH-6-derived attack helicopter for JGSDF would have looked like...... at least the Japanese would have had someone else to consult with.

See HERE and HERE!

I wonder what the belly gun pack contained......

Nah just MD 500 (the port side tail plane is the visible identifying feature) operated by the DPRK military.

It could be used as a reference for anyone who wishes to properly "Sovietize" the Scorpion helicopter from Fire Birds.

Credit goes here and to xinhui here for bringing this pic to our attention.

Archangel

Well there were quite a few used in the movies and television shows during the 80's

Capricorn One - Had 3 0H-6 helicopters chasing the 3 astronauts around the desert but I think they only had one armed with machine guns

Blue Thunder - The Col's OH-6 had dual 20-25 mm cannons

Airwolf - Pretty much every bad guys helo was an Hughes 500 or an OH-6

The A-Team - Once in awhile you would see a Hughes 500
