I rather suspect that the Spey and TF30 installations required some redesign of the fuselage around the engine, they are both rather larger than the J65 or J52.  The J79 would be a near fit, but I suspect there'd be some work there, too.

I think the F414 is more than adequate and satisfies the "commonality" issue; also being used in the A-6.  As for the dorsal hump, I had never considered using it as a conformal tank instead of for ECM; although, it should have been obvious.  With modern miniaturized electronics/avionics, I should be able to equip a Scooter with a modern, full avionics/electonics suite throughout the fuselage and then use the hump for more fuel.

It's just interesting the different studies Douglas did to see where they could take their Scooter.
