That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.

The problem with that system is/was that any potential enemy understood it as well. The RAF had the squadron code system prior to Sept 39 but then changed the codes immediately on outbreak of war. Any potential foe will eventually catch up but it's good to keep them guessing  ;D

Not particularly up on Japanese markings Al, but didn't the JAAF use stylised heraldry on the tail as squadron markings ?
