If W W2 FAA aircraft (torpedo aircraft  think Swordfish and Avengers) had propeller cones what colour do you think they would be painted.

Matt red always looks good but (I think)would make the airframe conspicuous during a torpedo run. I was thinking "sky" as it would blend with the Slate/Gray camo.

Would colour be frowned upon by the Admiralty or be embraced in the name of "esprit de corps"

As always your input will be most valued

Had a similar problem with my Bonxie (BoB GB), and it ended up with a red nose. Sky was too dull, but I am not certain how "official" this would have been?

NARSES2

I think it would probably be EDSG officially, but with Squadron and flight commanders possibly having individual colours ?
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

An internet trawl would suggest that FAA types that had spinners used these colours:

Seafires, EDSG, Red, Yellow, Sky.

Seahurricanes, Red, Yellow, Sky, White.

However I have it on the greatest of authorities that Rear Admiral, Lord Tarquin McPhail, of Auchinshugle, had the spinner of his personal aircraft painted in the McPhail battle tartan.

Any aircraft can be improved by giving it a SHARKMOUTH!

In the immediate pre-war years many FAA aircraft had their spinners painted in their Flight colours, A Flight Red, B Flight Blue and C Flight yellow etc.

When my Dad was on IV (AC) Squadron (in the RAF) in the late 30s they even painted the wheel hubs of their Audaxes in their Flight colours as well as the spinners!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Umm, the Swordfish has a propeller cone:-\

With the Fairey-Reed fixed-pitch twisted prop all they needed to fair was the hub.

The paint instructions for the Tamiya 1/48 Swordfish floatplane call out X-4 Blue for the pre-war scheme in the kit,
and XF-19 Sky Grey for the wartime cammoed version.

I've always liked the spiral pattern you see on some WW2 german stuff.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

umm I really must try harder to explain myself. If the swordfish  (as a starting point) had a larger  more noticeable /prominent cone and avenger and any torpedo equipped aircraft(,not fighters.) real, un developed, never left the drawing boards , bought, rented ,copied or imaginary also had a prominent cone.

The Swordfish  line drawing was perhaps a bit of overkill ( even for a plum like me) but I do get your point about the Swordfish having a propeller cone and shall wear peas in my shoes for the next month.   ;D ;D

Sorry if I confuse the forum and thanks for your input.

Kit and Chris :  EDSG and flight colours (early years) do seem a good choice and quite likely ,especially for the "WIF" I have in mind. Perhaps the wheel hubs could be in flight colours?

However the inner lunatic does like the idea of tartan, its a shame Tamiya  only does tartan in a rattle can  and doesnt do it in their acrylic range :banghead:

Then I'll go with that. Hopefully I can have it ready for Huddersfield and further debate will ensue  :drink:
