And the single-engined XF4O8 was closer to the Hellcat, but two-seater long range:

I like that concept.

Sorry, the pictures from my own site have disappeared, only the Photobucket's ones being still here.
I don't know if this will be cured.
As I have saved the World with my writings I may be forbidden from Internet and/or soon killed, not crucified anymore I am lucky... (and paranoid, yes). :-\

This Lockheed floatplane, designed with the help of Eng. Burnelli, was almost impossible to classify:

If it had been ordered and mass-produced, it would look "normal"... ;)

so beautiful!

even more than the other floatplane variations before that ...

it is comparable, favorably, to other flying wing seaplanes, like the Savoia-Marchetti S55X !

serious competitors (or inspiration sources) might be :

the flying pancake seaplane :

or others from the Northrop family : the YB-35W

or the B-2W :

Wow! These are very wonderful float-flying-wings that you have made, congratulations!
I will see if Lockheed tried these ways too, somehow... Thanks!

The archives do confirm without any doubt that these 3 seaplanes come from Lockheed:

Have Northrop & Vought paid the related Copyrights? On my side, I swear this comes from ©ericr®... ;)
