...The German was shocked ! He was really taken aback by my statement. Then he started stammering about Nazis, and his dad wasn`t one, but some of the family was, and about his teacher post-war talking about what a shame Stalingrad was, as they would have won the war etc. I wasn`t going to argue with him as the sleeping giant was already awake

Shades of Fawlty Towers!  Don't mention the war!

Also looks similar to Fort Nepean here at the end of the Mornington Peninsula.

This was from where the first Allied shots of both WW1 & WW2 were fired.
I guess there was a standard set of plans used to build the Empires defences. Or maybe they came flat packed?

I like the idea!  Eleventeen  huge cardboard boxes, a set of pictorial instructions and only a hammer, a cross head screwdriver and an allen key needed to build your own coastal defence system.

Incidentally, Captain, I forgot to say "Thanks for your posting these photos, they are very interesting"

It was a facetious comment (what! never!) but thinking about it isn't the modern prefab tilt up construction technique they use to build factory units and the like basically flat packed buildings?

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

Flat pack coastal defence systems.....why not ! We were going to go back with our wellies and flashlights to look around down below.

If anybody is ever travelling the East Coast of Canada, you can get to these places whilst waiting for the Ferry to Newfoundland. Only about 5 minutes away.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE CAPT'N
I don't want to create a new thread for some of my photos and will add them here - Captain, I hope you don't mind.
This August I had an amazing vacation in Nova Scotia and PEI with my family. On our fourth day, driving from Louisburg historical site to Badeck (birthplace of Canadian aviation) we passed through North Sidney and of course stopped at "Canso site". It was already after 6:30 p.m. and the light conditions were not the best, but I still could make some (ca.150) photos of the landmarks:

Plus the proof that I was there, not somebody else ;):

For those who want to know the exact location of the above place here is the latitude/longitude from Google Earth:  46°11'36.09"N, 60°15'55.86"W.
P.S. Some 2 days later I visited the Shearwater Aviation Museum in Dartmouth/Halifax and found this nice diorama, showing the PB2B-1 (Canso A), reg. 9754 with commander F/L David Ernest Hornell's attacking the U-1225.

QuoteOn 24 June 1944, during the successful attack on U-1225, F/L Hornell's Canso, No. 9754, was severely damaged by return fire from the submarine and ditched on the sea. For his bravery in pressing home the attack and his subsequent heroic efforts to save his crew, F/L Hornell was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
BTW the restored Canso of Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton represents the a/c of F/L Hornell:

Is that Canso on the pole a real, 1:1 scale one?

If so, that's one HECK of a pole they've got there!  :o
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Kit

I doubt it. Putting a Catalina on a pole would be very difficult and a criminal act in my opinion.

No, it's not. The replica is probably 1:6 - 1:8 or near to this.

Captain Canada

Very cool. Thanks for sharing the pics ! Look forward to seeing some more...and glad to hear you had a great vacation !

Hopefully you stopped and had a pint. It's always our tradition to "get on the beer at Cape Spear" lol. Beautiful site eh ? I've taken dozens of pics their. I've always wanted to build a replica of that cannon in wartime guise, complete with a working elevating mechanism for reloading

No beer at Cape Spear but did enjoy a couple of Quidi Vidi's finest on the way to Cabot Tower.

Amazing whale show off the Cape though - 20+ humpbacks plus the odd minke.  The capelin was in I think.

Fantastic pictures. I never knew that the Eastern seaboard had such fortifications especially the more modern ones. You live and learn
