I use two different methods for natural metal finish: Humbrol paints for a more weathered look and Gunze Mr. Metal Color for a more shiny appearance.

On the Hien I used Humbrol silver in four different shades:

- Humbrol Silver No.11
- 1 part Gloss White No.22 mixed with 5 parts Silver No.11
- 1 part Gloss Black No.21 mixed with 10 parts Silver No.11
- 1 part Gloss Black No.21 mixed with 5 parts Silver No.11

For the masking of the Humbrol paint I use pieces of cello tape, which I first touch rather strongly with my thumb to make it less sticky. After removing the tape it leaves a slight random pattern on the silver, which gives it a worn appearance.

The wheel-wells were tricky indeed. After cutting out, I actually filled them almost completely with filler. Today I would use the wings from the Fine Molds kits. Fine Molds wings are made to fit the Hasegawa wing and also have already the correct aileron and flap size – saves us quite some time.

some more shots...mottle next using the sharpened sprue technique...not game enough to use my airbrush

here're the mottles partly completed...the beauty of the sprue technique is that it may be completed quickly with nil stress at botching the job...but they are sharp-edged mottles...you dip the sprue into the paint and draw the mottles on like you are using the sprue like a pen

Great mottling Al.  I've got a set of 1/72 decals to do that.  Obviously they won't go on a Hien...

That is nice Al, impressive mottles. I sometimes use a sharpened cocktail stick for detail "painting" wheel hubs, tyres etc, but hadn't thought of sharpened sprue.

Found I have at least 3 Hasegawa Hein's the other day whilst looking for something else. I feel a real world build coming on after looking at this. 

  I've got a set of 1/72 decals to do that. 

I've got some Italian "smoke ring" transfers but not seen mottles. Have you any details please mate ?

By "Print Scale Decals".  They were on special and I couldn't resist.

Do you put a notch in the tip of the sprue, like a quill? I'd like to experiment with that.

By the way, I've got some really nice Hien decals (1/48) from an Aeromaster sheet...would look a lot nicer than those old yellowed ones. Could post 'em to you but might delay completion by a week or so

no notch needed at the end of the sharpened sprue...just sand it until it has a tapered, but bluntish, end and you're good to go
