A Different Bull

Moscow – Victory Day Parade 1946
Western observers at the Parade where startled by the appearance of 5 previously unknown four engined aircraft in the groups of bombers in the flypast. The aircraft, with their long wingspan were quite distinctive in shape, and the RAF Military Attache from the British Embassy reported to the War Department that these looked remarkably similar to the Messerschmitt Me-264, and that this may have accounted for the mysterious disappearance of at least one of the prototype aircraft from Germany at the end of hostilities.
The new bomber was initially given the reporting name Bull by Allied forces [although this was later changed to Bert when the Tu-4 went into service], and attributed to the Tupolev Design Bureau. Enquiries made through official channels to confirm this were unsuccessful, the Soviet Officials declining to comment on their new aircraft, and other, more unofficial routes where equally unsuccessful.
It wasn't until much later that some of the story came to light. Stalin, having already ordered the Tupolev team to copy the B-29 [as the Tu-4], instructed the Ilyushin Design Bureau to provide a back-up aircraft, and they were given access to both the captured Me-264 and all the documents relating to it obtained by Soviet Agents. As the Me-264 was a more basic design than the B-29, Ilyushin were able to reverse engineer and produce pre-production aircraft much quicker than their rivals at Tupolev, and 5 pre-production models took part in the 1946 Victory parade. The aircraft was given the code Il-7 by Ilyushin.
Subsequent testing however revealed that the aircraft was far from satisfactory, being underpowered and having less range than hoped for.
Testing continued, but Stalin delayed ordering the aircraft into production until he knew whether or not the Tu-4 would prove successful. The fate of the 5 aircraft is unknown, although there is some evidence that at least 3 were modified with more powerful engines and had cameras and additional fuel tanks installed in the bomb bays, increasing the range sufficiently to allow high altitude flights over both Western Europe and Canada and the Northern USA. These flights provided the USSR with much information about the air defences of Europe and North America.
