Thanks! This one seems to be flying under the radar a bit. Totally understandable given the many fantastic entries in the Soviet GB. I've been getting more traction on my parallel Gnat F.1 build for some reason, but I consider this one my current "main" project.

I tried to pre-shade the panel lines again. I've had limited success with this, and the black came out a bit spotty for some reason, but it is what it is I guess.

I've tried pre-shading 1/72 builds with no success whatsoever. IMO it its therefore only suitable for 1/48 & up.
If I can't do it then nobody should

I too have tried preshading 1/72nd scale stuff, and to be honest wondered why I bothered. I am liking this build and will be watching it come to fruition for sure. The thing needs as much help from the whiffverse as it can get as the real one was an expensive ornament really.

Yup! Looks bleedin' awesome! Not only the dark colour but, additionally, the lack of national markings adds to the sinister look!

I'm glad you guys like it. The one thing that bugs me is that the red triangle decals that are supposed to go in front of the side intakes disintegrated coming off the paper. I think those at least were a critical addition that didn't get done.

All in all, I can't really complain. For some reason, this build just went off the rails. One of the reasons it looks so sinister is that I had a lot of trouble with the paint. I had to keep touching up the dark blue... so it just kept getting darker and darker. The weird thing is that no matter how many times I touched up the dark blue, I kept getting these little sparkles in the paint coat. What made it worse was that I also couldn't seem to make a straight mask line to save my life. Had to touch up the grey underside... then I realized the curved part where the dark blue meets the under carriage grey was lopsided...

I ended up somehow destroying the cockpit decals and just didn't have the heart to try and re-do them in situ.

Oh well, they can't all go down smooth... and considering I'm a wee bit past the deadline on this GB entry... I suppose I should just be happy it got finished(ish).

We've all had models that for what ever reason behave like that, mind of their own sometimes

No metallic paints were used. I did have that problem once before when I just started using the airbrush and accidentally used black too soon after spraying aluminium without properly cleaning it. This time was different. I was just using straight up Tamiya acrylics (XF-17 I think), but I suspect there might have been some grease/oil (possibly from fingers) on the model. There was one spot in particular that kept having a bit more of a "wet" look to it. However the entire rest of the dark blue area was infested with little shiny specks - perhaps either from dust or oil, I'm not sure.

Part of the reason it looks so dark and sinister is that I kept painting it with the darker shade I'd first planned to use as a bit of post-shading. Anyway, it got to the point where I realized the way back to correct the issue was going to be untenable so I just soldiered on and said "well, good enough is good enough". The coat of Future did help tone it down a bit (well, shine it all up equally I guess).

That's when the problem with the 30+ year old decals from Tsukuda reared their ugly head. Like I said, the little ones didn't really bother me, but having the red triangles disintegrate on me was really frustrating. I got enough of one on one side to see how it would've looked. If I end up later with some new air intake decals, I might give it another go, but for now I have no real other options than just putting it on the shelf next to the MiG-21... and trying not to peer into the open cockpit too much.
