The fuel carrying problem was looked at in real life. Freightdog does a conversion (I think) of the extended under belly tank which goes as far forward as the nose wheel bay (and half way through it too IIRC). I think it's part of another variant that was planned.

Nice idea. I have thought about this.  Will have to scratchbuild though, as I work in 1/48.

Had a look at freightdog's website and don't seem to be able to find what I thought was there, maybe I was reading an article in a book or something. I'll have a route around and see if I can find it.

I wonder what a Frightning would look like extended forward, with the wing roots also lengthened forward & with area rule bulges fore & aft?

Freightdog do an FGA conversion set for a proposed Ground Attack project. Is it possible that you saw that and got confused with a project in a book or something?

One configuration of the proposed swing-wing Lightning for the RN had the extended
belly tank.
