A solar powered tank! Whatever next!   :o
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

I've always explained in my headcanon that the TIE's (and any derivatives' thereof) distinctive panels are not actually solar panels but radiator plates for the main reactor. After all, Rebel (Old Republic, New Republic) starfighters have much larger "exhausts" which glow white-hot (implying extremely high temperature), while TIE's seen in the films have two tiny, tiny apertures that glow red (implying a low temperature). Assuming both use roughly the same kind of engine technology, all that heat must go somewhere...

This would also explain why the cockpit is unpressurized; after all, vacuum does not conduct heat so this way the pilot is less likely to be boiled alive. If it were presssurised, then the pilots would propbably have to wear minimal clothing in addition to a cooling vest - the handwaving with which BattleTech explains the very fanservice-y pictures of all the female MechWarriors - and would still be in danger of passing out from heatstroke when they apply full military power.

As to why the panels are so ridiculously large that they block the pilot's vision - they have to be HUEG, because in space they can only dissipate heat through radiation, not by conduction, and the centre of gravity still has to be maintained. Tanks of course often operate within an atmosphere, but knowing the Empire, they would be designed to function in absolutely any environment, so even on a tank the radiator plates would have to be sized for vacuum operations. Of course, this would give an added bonus: when operating on a habitable world, the "TIE tanks" would be able to run their reactors hotter and provide more energy for their laser cannons.

;D

This is very good! I like it very much. Continue the great work.

Not sure it fits into any "known" universe &, as a tank, it's far from practical.

However, it looks cool & it has those essential elements for a SciFi "bad guy" vehicle - a plethora of weak points & blind spots for the "good guys" to take advantage of.

Well done!
Has a life outside of What-If & wishes it would stop interfering!
