The P-38 did indeed have its radiators in the tail booms, and before the "big chin" models the
intercoolers were the leading edge of the outer wing panels.

Note that the potential horsepower output of the engine was probably much higher than shown
in the P&W info because they didn't pursue a two-stage supercharging*, mechanical or turbo,
test and development program with the engine. The Twin Wasp/R-1830 wasn't physically much
larger or heavier and was considered to have far more development potential.

That said a turbosupercharged R-1535 powered USN Lightning is an intriguing concept, especially
if more tightly cowled than the Northrop A-17/BT1, Vought SBU/SB2U and Miles Master III etc.
installations.

*When looking at Pratt & Whitney model codes, rather than the military "R-" designations, an SS
indicates two-stage supercharging.
