The  DC-3/C-47 Dakota is a versatile aircraft used in most theatres of war apart from two exceptions as a dedicated bomber and refueling tanker.
This doesn't stop the Whiffer from adding the 1/72  range from Attack Squadron to the list. Under wing  hose & drogue pods or the  Harvest Hawk as usual by the US marines on the KC-130J and V-22 Osprey.
Engine update kits have included the resin Heritage Aviation Models Limited Rolls-Royce Dart and BT-67 turboprop although they have stopped selling them. ( Name changed to KitsforCash).
AlleyCat now do the Basler Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67R  Turbo Dakota conversion priced around £20 stock code:
AC72032C which is featured in the Airfix Model World October 2017 issue.
The range also includes the Maritime , Transport and Gunship models. With a host of donor kits to choose from. This doesn't stop you from adding a third engine to the nose or having iron bombs carried underneath the fuselage in pylons or bomb racks.
For me if it hasn't been done already in the Whiff world or Real Word an AEW & C using either the AN/APS-20 radome from the Avro Shackleton AEW.2 or something similar or the Erieye carried above the fuselage.
The different combinations are endless with floats or skis, military or civilian options.
There's a Dakota out there ready for you to build.
