The Alenia C-27J reminds me of the Fairchild Provider. With that in mind the possibilities for Whiffing begin to expand.
The usual;
Gunship
Maritime Patrol/Surveillance
Search and Rescue
Transport
Electronic Warfare- Command and Control
Are available in the real world, the gunship was built and evaluated by the USAF and plans for a multi-missions version for  Special Operations before budget cuts forced the disposal of the order came into effect.
The US Coast Guard fly the C-27.
I'm sure that the engines could be changed to TF-33's or CFM jets. Or a glider if you prefer.
An AEW variant resembling the An-74 MadCap or fit the Erieye .
A seaplane/float plane for special operations or Polar patrols with skis fitted.
I'm not too sure that a COD version would be too big but a mini-tanker might be better.
No doubt someone will try and stretch the fuselage.
The 1/72 Italeri kit is well detailed, there are plenty of C-130 photo etched and resin enhancement sets that can be used for your build.

If Alenia refitted the tail with a Hawkeye/Greyhound style tail, it might work.  Of course, the other problems are being able to withstand repeated cats and traps, saltwater corrosion, and the other myriad of NAVAIR problems.

I came across the 1/72 Italeri No 1284
C-27J Spartan whilst looking for parts for my other started builds and wondered if you can fit the engines from the Airfix Lockheed S-3 Viking and the rotodome from the Hasegawa Grumman E-2 Grumman.
Yes you can, I'm not too sure if the designation would still be kept or changed to the EC-127 Spartacus.
