I wonder if there would have been an advantage to having a near-identical profile between escort and bomber.  I know pilots had to take aircraft identification classes.  Could keep the attackers guessing for a few crucial seconds whether they were approaching the bomber formation or its escorts.

The P.48 was a slightly enlarged P.38, still much smaller than the P.37,
so there's no way they could use a pattern from a P.37 kit.

A further enlarged version to be powered by Hispano-Suiza 12Z engines was also
studied as the P.54 Rys Lynx.
