Oldtimer Weekend 2018

Hello all,

This weekend was the annual Oldtimer Weekend at the Medlánky glider airport in Brno, Czech Republic.

The weather was lovely with Autumn backdrops to shoot some of the action against.

What looked like a freshly built Grunau Baby II was the first thing to get my attention upon arrival:

The Let LF-109 Pionýr is a Czech training design dating to 1950



The Zlín Z-24 Krajánek is a post WWII Czech variation of the Baby II

Another Czech rarity was this VSB-62 Vega from 1962. The only one of its kind ever made


A Zlín ZG-125 Šohaj goes aloft. The Šohaj familz of gliders dates to 1947


Not vintage, but quite welcome all the same was this Duo Discus


We also had some vintage GA aircraft on hand:

These two Zlín Tréners, a Z-226 and Z-126 respectively, dropped in to join the event



This Orličan L-60 Brigadýr took skydivers up several times

LOVELY stuff there, and what superb weather for it too. 

Does the L-13SE Vivat have some relationship to a Blanik? It has similar wings and it's model no. is very similar too.

As for the Duo Discus  that's the highest performancve glider I've ever flown, it was AWESOME!

The Vivat is a descendant design of the Blanik created by Aerotechnik, now Evektor, in the 1970s.

It's the rear fuselage, tail and wings of the Blanik attached to a two place forward fuselage with an engine compartment.

As both Let and Aerotechnik were based at the same airport, it was not difficult for Let to subcontract the motorisation af the Blanik to Aerotechnik. I think that's why the Vivat and Blanik have similar designations as the Vivat is considered part of the Blanik family.

I love the single main wheel look.  I am thinking about translating this to a light aircraft design rather than a powered glider.

One of the current GA homebuilts has one central main wheel and outriggers on the wings, the Europa XS. But you can build it with three normal wheels as well.

For some reason it looks even more like a Blanik with an engine in that pic. Nor sure why as a Blanik only has one wheel too.

Looks good.
I was fiddling with one boom of a Bronco today.  It wouldn't be at all difficult to build a monocycle undercarriage aircraft just from Bronco parts (plus a bubble canopy) but I think the wings should be something a bit more slender.  I need to have a rummage in my wings box.
