Personally I don't actually care if what we do as "what if" is science fiction (that's just where I put it because, to me, it mostly fits the alt. universe sub-genre), fantasy or magic mushie musings.

I prefer it to "real" modelling because it's more artistic, with a much higher level of imagination & creativity, &, frequently, as much skill & technical ability as shown by the best "real" modellers.

As far as I'm concerned there is no "mere" to attach to any form of modelling .... Except, perhaps, rivet counting; that's merely stupid (unless you're Logan, who does it with style ;) ).

The laws of physics (as we know them!) can be a step from WHIF to fantasy for me.  So getting back to the original post, I would consider a properly done forward swept wing MiG-29 a WHIF, while a MiG-29 with anti-gravity or a cloaking device would be fantasy.
