Barry, it's simple.  The air path follows the arrow.  It goes in under, moves up and enters the rear of the engine.  There it's compressed, then fuel is added and ignited.  The power turbine is separate (see, there's no link between the two big fans near the gear box) and the exhaust gases escape once they've given a spin to the turbine that drives the prop!
