There is a group build on another site (I shall not name) where the USA enters WW2 in 1940. I was thinking that the "Eagle Squadron" is more of a wing and would have bombers as well as fighters. Would it be reasonable for Whitleys, Hurricanes in RAF cammo, but with US stars?

Why not? And Wellingtons and Hampdens too.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Yes ! All of the above. I've thought about a Hampden in the sand brown type camo with the early US round stars like a Spitfire. Would look like a closet Martin.
