An alternative to the Avro Shackleton 'heavies'

 In the past I have used parts from a Airfix B-24 Liberator on the Frog Avro Shackleton MR.3 which didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to.
With the newish Airfix Avro Shackleton MR.2 and Revell Avro Shackleton MR.3 plus their own versions of the AEW.2 I'm confident that I can achieve this build.
I now know that it isn't a straight forward conversion,  nor can you just add the weapons from an Avro Lancaster straight onto the Shackleton without stepping back and making concessions.
Learning from past mistakes is part of the experience of being a Whiffer. I did manage to graft the rear of a Matchbox Avro Lincoln BI/III to a Frog Avro Shackleton MR.3 and the upper gun turret but I had problems with the nose. I know now that this has to be extended.
I did toy with putting the resin parts from the David J.Parkins Avro Lincoln conversion set onto another Frog Avro Shackleton MR.3. I got as far as extending the fuselage.
In another whiff I used parts from a Academy Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter; engines and tail to create the Avro Shackleton P-45 Maverick.
But what if instead of lengthening the Shackleton you were to go widthways?
Taking a leap of faith from the topic 'twin booms ', I'm thinking about using three Shackleton kits for the one build 
First thought
Keep the middle Shackleton for the pilot and crew but turn it into a long-range fuel tank,  the other two either side are large bomb bays. Extra engines and landing gear.
Second thought
Why not make the Shackleton fuselage wider? If I bought just two kits I could lengthen the wings and widen the fuselage by adding the two extra fuselage halves either side. I could retain the bomb bay doors.
