Madhatter: just glad I got it right!

Kit: Thinking about it some more, the earliest work on supersonics was concerned with bullets because they were the only thing remotely capable of going that fast. When aircraft designers started to work on supersonic planes, the only research they had to turn to was shells and bullets, hence the shape of the Bell X-1 and the Miles M.52.

I read about it recently but couldn't remember the year.  I was also surprised.
