Digital camera tips

I was a little disappointed at the close-focus distance on our Kodak CX-7300, but figured that was a small price to pay given the, um, small price I had to pay, as it were. The camera was so inexpensive I would have been silly not to get it.

So, how to get close-ups...? Turn to my old equipment and summon the inventive qualities of my nature photographer persona, and the solution was rather easy. First, use my close-up filters. Simple magnifying lenses with 3 different diopters, they screwed onto the front of my regular camera's lens. Holding them in front of the digital camera does the same job. Stacking all three together and I'm good down to about, oh, 25-30cm(?)

Closer, much closer. Take the 50mm lens from my OM1, reverse it, and hold it in front of the digital's lens. Bingo! Almost close enough to spot a wart on a fly's arse! I'll be posting some soon.

If you've scratched your heads wondering how to get really close, grab the lens off your old tired film camera and try it.  B)

My digi-cam had macro, so I can get pretty close with that.

Also, with the software you can crop the pics and do close-ups that way.

Cheers !

My digicam is good to about 10 cm, which is close enough that the camera's shadow can obscure the object. I've managed to take good photos of a 1:24 engine block.
Cropping a photo to get a close-up usually results in a very low-resolution image (just like the useless 'digital zoom' found on most digicams), so I try to avoid that.

I've all but binned my digi. I prefer to use my SLR with the macro lens. Then get the pics put onto CD when I get 'em developed. Much better pics that way.

I feel the same way. The digicam is really just for snapshots. I won't be getting heavily into digital until it has;

Kodachrome resolution

Kodachrome colour

And a camera system just like my beloved OM1 - interchangeable lenses, multiple methods of exposure control, and affordable!

I inquired a few months ago about the possibility of getting digital backs for my SLRs. Yeah, they're available. $15,000 each.

Screw that.  :o

Nikon make a big digital SLR, the price is down to about $1000 USD. We might go for it...........especially since all my F70 lenses will fit right on.

That looks a good price converted to sterling - when I'm in the States for Thanksgiving I'll have to have a look

I replaced my old Kodak DC290 (2.3mp 3xoptical) last November with a much more sophisticated Kodak DX6490 (4mp, 10xoptical etc). The macro can get focus down to 50mm from the subject which I find adequate for my needs.

The pic below is a Monogram 1:48 Monogram Clarkson Tractor with a Fujimi 1:48 P-51D in the background.

I am learning all the time with this new camera and am no where near proficient with it as yet.

For sure...and it's even better in the Etats Unis, as their dollar is weak and the camera is only $1000 USD over there !

Years ago, I met a dude from the UK at Hamilton, photographing the Lanc as she was firing up. We both were shooting Nikon F60s, so started talking. He was happier than a pig in poo-poo at picking it up in Michigan with two lens ( 80 and 300 ) for $300 USD !

Tell me about it Capt' - I've bought my last two camera's in the US, and even after paying duty I still got them at half the UK price ! We pay more for everything except beer I reckon.

Digital has kicked film cameras hard in the nads on resell value..most shops here don't want a film camera unless its lesss then 3 years old and they give a pittnace on trade. My shop is JUST used film (hey we will do digital if anyone likes the depreciation of 80-90% typically...lol) and lil guys like an F-60 go for 250$$ CDN...with lens!
You can buy a LOT of film and have it scanned direct to disk for the extra $1000.00 you'd be spending to get into a SLR Digital....but they ARE fun toys!
Myself, I'd go into the Pentax Digital SLR, uses almost ALL Pentax lenses, all the way back to the old screw mounts with adapters and is a full frame chip, allowing you to use real wide angle lenses and not get a tele effect....
Don't get me started about Nikno and compatability issues...grrrrrrrrrr

I resently bought a new digital camera, a Konika Minolta X50, with a 6 cm minimum focal distance and 5 megapixel CCD.

But I still retain my two old Minolta SLR's, shooting mostly slides (Ektachrome) with these. I've also got a slides scanner though so I can digitize whichever slides I wish.
