Hi folks,

A thread for the Yakovlev piston engined fighters - Yak-1, 3, 9 etc etc.

To start with here is a Sabre engined Yak-3 (I don't know why either):

I like your Sabre engined Yak!

As you outlined, the main issue of the Sabre variant seams to be the propeller size!

PS : Thanks for initiating this thread Greg, I'm a big fan of the Yak-3 and Yak-9u!

It's difficult enough to invent a What-if Yak, because almost all possible versions really existed. But... How about a float version?

I develop it from the Yak-9, because it was the most popular Soviet WW2 fighter and its flight range was the largest, which is important for the seaplane. The floats themselves are from Beriev KOR-1 catapultable recon biplane, but their installation is more aerodynamic, of course without any wires. Also the float Yak has enlarged vertical tail fin, taken from the jet Yak-15.

It couldn't be named neither Yak-9M (for Morskoi), nor Yak-9P (for Poplavkovyi), because there were another versions with these letters. So let it be Yak-9-Gidro or simply Yak-9G.
Best regards,
Soviet Aviation enthusiast

Okay, so who had a Yak-52 interceptor with a side-firing small-arms gunner in the back seat on their bingo card for 2024?  :o

Interesting article, thanks.

So back to the old WW1-style hand-held and -aimed, rear-cockpit weaponry... but if it works, it's a valid weapons system.
And a way for those too old for military service, but with an appropriate skillset, to take an active part - as the article notes.

Take a Yak-11 trainer, put a bigger engine on it, do some other mods for speed and to keep it somewhat controllable...
