Or if the French settlers had made it to the South Island ahead of the British, and there was some sort of continuation, or revival of the War of 1812 over here.
The Maori then allying with both sides, depending on which Iwi (tribe) they were and which other Iwi they were fighting at the time.

You could even get some Unreconstructed Southrons coming over to try and help the British, and the Northern States sending help to oust them as payback for them helping the South in the ACW.

My niece returned from a trip to NZ a while back with a gift of a tee shirt for me.
It reads "New Zealand. 40.9ºS. 1642".
She bought it thinking it was a good souvenir little realising it is actually a coded message from kiwis to 'strayans.
What it really says is "New Zealand.  Further South than you.  Discovered first."

One island occupied by Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves and Men.  The other by Goblins, Orcs, Trolls and Lawyers.
